With a rich heritage spanning more than 90 years, AJW stands proudly as a global supply chain solutions provider. But what is this independent industry leader doing to reduce its environmental impact, to protect the planet, and its people?
Aviation Business News published its COP28 Environmental Special Issue this month, and the publication approached Clyde Buntrock, CEO AJW Aviation & Technique with questions about the Group’s sustainability practices following its commitment to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) earlier this year.
AJW Group's commitment to growth and change extends beyond customer service to encompass environmental sustainability and responsible business practices. The company has reinforced this commitment by becoming a signatory to the UN Global Compact, focusing on the repair, reuse, and recycling of aircraft components, eco-friendly practices, and adherence to the UNGC's four pillars: Human Rights, Labour, Environment, and Anti-Corruption.
In the realm of sustainable corporate governance, AJW’s practices particularly emphasise the principles relating to Human Rights, Labour, and Anti-Corruption. The company's Legal and People teams ensure compliance with these principles, focusing on the protection of human rights and the elimination of forced labour, child labour, and discrimination in employment. The Finance and Legal teams conduct regular training to combat corruption, reinforcing a culture of integrity.
AJW's dedication to environmental responsibility is manifested through initiatives like sustainable packaging, effective waste management, and greener warehousing practices. The Procurement team and Sustainability Partner actively seek sustainable methods of business operation, fostering an internal culture that promotes awareness of the company's sustainability goals.
AJW Interiors has partnered with AutoStop Aviation, Europe's largest seat covering manufacturing facility, to introduce SkyLeather®, a revolutionary, eco-friendly material. Composed of 100% water-based polyurethane, SkyLeather® is free from harmful chemicals, PVC, and phthalates. Not only is it 25% lighter than traditional hide leather, but it also facilitates significant fuel savings for airlines, reducing both weight and carbon footprint.
AJW's commitment to sustainability extends to its headquarters, where rainwater harvesting systems and solar panels exemplify responsible resource management. The Facilities and Operation teams are expanding the solar panel initiative, resulting in a substantial annual reduction of 425 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Efforts are underway to power AJW Technique Europe with solar energy, promoting sustainable battery recharge for aircraft.
